PORTUS SST™ defends against Identity Theft

Houston, TX (November 18th, 2004) - Freemont Avenue Software, Inc. announced the release of its Software Security Token. According to Jim Livermore, President, "SST solves the requirement for secure access to online banking, government facilities and other high-risk, secured activities. SST protects client data from unauthorized access. Low cost per user makes SST the choice for quick acquisition and deployment."

User IDs and static passwords cannot provide sufficient security on the Internet. The use of SSL to encrypt transmitted passwords fails to protect against methods such as password sniffing and phishing scams. Phishing is the use of legitimate looking e-mails that direct recipients to divulge user IDs, passwords, credit card numbers and other sensitive information on-line at counterfeit websites. During the past year phishing scams enticed 57 million users into divulging their personal information. "These phishing schemes have cost financial institutions more than $1 billion," according to Livermore.

Trojan horses are used to capture user IDs and passwords on infected Windows computers. The user ID and password are automatically sent to a remote computer and retrieved by the identity thief. The combination of phishing, identity theft and malicious programs have made static passwords incapable of protecting online assets.

Strong user authentication is more secure than static passwords as it relies on something the user knows (such as a pass-phrase) and something they possess such as the SST. SST controls access to sensitive systems or networks through the use of a challenge-response system, creating an encrypted, unique identifier each time a system or network is accessed. According to Livermore "Challenge-response replaces the standard username/password combination which has not been able to protect sensitive information. SST is a product designed to help prevent identity theft by providing for secure remote authentication of users." SST runs on Windows for end users, and on AIX, Linux and Solaris for the host servers. Unlike competing products SST is software and not a hard token. The convenience of use and low cost to implement guarantee user acceptance.
